4 Easy Ways To Have An Eco-Friendly Summer

Updated: Apr 20

It's officially summer - more skin, more sun and more fun. Many of us will be trying to escape to the beaches and pools this summer, practicing social distancing of course, and will be packing for the road. With travel, alot of one time use plastics and waste can pile up quickly, so we've put together an easy guide to stay eco-friendly while having fun in the sun.

1. Non-Toxic / No Chemical SPF

First things first, our skin is the realist - it's the largest organ of the body and absorbs literally everything it touches. Chemicals found in traditional SPF's include butylparaben, octinoxate, oxybenzone, and 4-methylzylidine camphor which all contributes to:

  • Hormone disruptors.

  • DNA-damaging free radicals.

  • Increase sensitivity to allergic reactions.

  • Increase risk of skin cancer (yep — you read that right!).

  • Premature aging (did someone say wrinkles?).

  • Loss of skin protection (meaning it’s damn near useless).

  • Endocrine disrupting.

Including the coral bleaching; killing off reefs and ocean life. Scientist say about 4K-6K tons of sunscreen enters the coral reefs every year.

Our favorite (tried and tested) SPF is COOLA.

2. Leaping Bunny Skincare & Hair Care

It's been known that chemicals found in our cosmetics, soaps, shampoos and conditioners as well as other personal hygiene cleansing routines actually cause more damage than it does healing - for instance, did you know that the chemical -paraben (which extends shelf life) is found in 99% of breast cancer patients? Parabens are in our lotions, deodorants, serums... YUCK! and not to mention, the waste it carries when it goes down our drains.

Make the switch, your skin, locks and Mother Earth will thank you.

Our favorite brand is MONAT (they have shampoos for our fur babies too).

3. Metal Straws, Reusable Cups & Filtered Water Bottles

You know you're going out, you know you're going to be drinking either water or wine chillers. Either way, you'll be drinking from a cup and most likely with a straw.

Since many of us don't have to worry about traveling outside of US of A this summer because of the travel ban, we don't have to worry too much on getting clean water. However, if you are taking a hike or going to the lake, you might want to invest in a nice, quality filtered water bottle. Our favorite is Brita 20oz Premium Double Wall Stainless Steel Filtered Water Bottle found at Target for less than $30.

When it comes to everyday cups, the best is STOJO.

Last but not least, stock up on those metal straws. We love Tiny Turtle - they come in various colors in packs of three's, that includes cleaning brush and pouch.

4. BYOB ... Bring Your Own Bag!

Again, we can't stress enough that if you're going out, be prepared! Keeping reusable bags with you is the hottest way to shop every day, all day.

Reusable bags are also stronger and more durable allowing you to pack MORE in one bag, saving you space for that extra luggage.

Another helpful way to encourage you is shopping at grocery stores such as ALDI where you have to PAY for bags, so by bringing your own, you're actually saving money or Trader Joe's that actually gives you .05 cents off - hey every penny counts!

Go support some of your local stores and see what bags suits your style.
